1. All the members of staff including PDF and research scholars were given a Pentium machine with newer version of Operating System on their desks.
  2. ANUNET VSAT connectivity for voice communication has been used by the members through EPBAX telephone connection.
  3. Three high speed print servers have been attached with laser printers for high speed printing.
  4. SCPC VAST ERNET bandwidth for Internet connection has been upgraded to 512 Kbps. Besides 512 Kbps VSAT link, Institute has one more Internet link of 2 Mbps thorugh BSNL.
  5. HRI’s Name server, NIS server has been changed and upgraded. HRI’s mail server has also been changed and upgraded in secure mode with anti-spam and anti-virus facility. Mails of the HRI users are made available on HRI’s home page also through webmail (Secure & Standard).
  6. Facility of watching live web cast of conferences on our computer has been incorporated.
  7. All the computers are made secured.
  8. The computer centre provides the connectivities to all individual machines on our LAN through Giga back bone from 3 centralised places.
  9. The UPS power supply to all computers are provided through centralised 5 Nos. 20 KVA, 1 No. 12 KVA and 2 Nos. 5 KVA online UPS systems.
  10. Couple of Laptops are being used by the faculty members to present their talks in India and abroad.
  11. Facility of presenting talks/lectures on wide screen of the auditorium directly from laptop useing the DLP has been provided.
  12. Conversion of video taps into video data files and their unicasting on our Intranet is being done.
  13. Web based suggestion program has been added in our home page.

Current Activities and plans

  1. It is planned to upgrade the Internet bandwidth. 106 PCTEX Evaluation
  2. It is planned to further secure all the systems with 2 DMZs using OpenBSD operating system.
  3. Campus wide networking covering residences also, on wireless LAN is being planned.
  4. Seperate place and systems are being planned for conferences and school programmes.
  5. New Cluster is being developed on Intel based machines using Linux and Dolphin’s Wolfkit.
  6. One high end Compaq Alpha Server is being purchased under the cripotography project.
  7. 2 Nos. Sun Blade 2000 workstations are being purchased under the HEP project.
  8. 2 Nos. Intel Xeon based servers are being purchased under the INO project.
  9. A new scanner with scanning facility of Negative films has been added.
  10. A new File server SUN Fire 280R with storage A1000 with RAID and Super DLT (320 GB) is being purchased.
